10 Reasons You Need To Put Down Your Drink And Dance

I’m going to cut to the chase here because I believe the title of this blog speaks for itself. We are all well aware that we have a health crisis in the “Western World.” We also know that dancing is good for your health. So, this article is for you, Mr. or Mrs. “I only dance when I’m drunk.”

10 Reasons You Need To Put Down Your Drink And Dance:

1. You are going to spill on the dance floor. While a slick floor does help me with my moonwalk, it makes cryp-walking and break dancing a serious challenge.

2. You are going to splash on us. I personally don’t care if you spill on me--I go out prepared. I’m wearing Vibrams and I’m covered in sweat anyway so I may actually enjoy getting spritzed with your craft beer. On the other hand, Mr. Buff Guys with suede shoes on my right, or Ms. White Dress on my left will be very upset if your booze ends up on their outfit. Your spillage could start some shit and none of us came here for bad vibes. We’re gathered here to have fun.

3. Hands are one of your most important means of communicating on the dance floor. With them you can point, wave, clap, and even raise the roof. You may be pleasantly surprised to learn what happens when you release the vice grip on your Jack and Coke-- you may feel more of the energies of the music and the dancers around you. Men especially, look around you at people who use their arms and hands to express themselves. Give it a try, you may up your dancing game to the next level in just minutes!

4. Drinking does not make you dance better. It makes you a sloppier dancer. Yes, you are getting looser, but no, you are not getting smoother. When you fall down, or almost fall and catch yourself, we notice. We know you weren’t dropping it like it’s hot. You are not moving with grace, you are creating a safety hazard. We are becoming concerned.

5. Look, I’m not trying to tell you you need to go to an AA meeting. Having a drink or two is a great way to share a moment with friends, new and old. Make a toast, top someone off, let someone try your delicious local IPA. It can also lube you up a little bit so you feel less shy. That said, there is a very fine line between being social and being a wreck. One is a pleasure to be around, the other, well, you wouldn’t remember anyway.

6. I may be ostracized/feathered/stoned for saying this, but you don’t need to be drunk in order to dance. While it may be painful for you to be coherent when there is a DJ spinning, try easing into it. Let the first couple songs be a warm-up. Be patient. If you aren’t vibing it at that point, go drink some water and use the bathroom. Chances are someone has been watching you and admiring your commitment. If you still aren’t feeling it, move on to the next spot. And good news! You didn’t spend your entire paycheck on Patron shots. And double good news, you didn’t blow your hot vodka breath into anyone’s face.

7. Dancing is art. Dancing is how you express your body. Dancing is a way of life. Most cultures on this planet dance to have fun. Drinks are not a part of the equation. This is our original programming. Look at children--they dance like they’re wasted. That’s the good stuff. That’s what we should all strive for.

8. “Ery body in the club gettin’ tipsy” is not an excuse. Nor is it true. In fact, I’ve found that the hottest messes in da club are often designated drivers, Mormons, and straight edgers. Don’t assume, bro.

9. Be practical. Dancing leads to sweating leads to dehydration leads to soreness. There is NO reason to keep drinking at 2am. You are not “lame” if you nurse a water. You are smart. And if you offer water to your friends, well, now you’re a hero.

10. The power of the pack is very, well...powerful. Even if your plan is to lay off the sauce for the night, once the bottles start poppin’ around you it can be a challenge to stick to the plan. Great news everybody, there are places you can go to dance where there is no alcohol to be found. There is a movement happening toward conscious dance parties and let me tell you, these are the wildest bashes you will ever experience.
